Alert! Wordfence has detected an active attack on WordPress sites

Wordfence sent out an email this morning, warning WordPress users of a detected distributed brute force attack on WordPress sites.

Auto-Unblock now available for all MacHighway users

As you may know, we have systems in place that protect your website and email from what are known as “brute-force attacks.” In a brute-force attack a hacker uses a program to run through a list of thousands of possible logins, trying to guess a valid username and password combination, so they can gain access to your website files or email.

What’s going on?
There have been frequent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on carl.machighway.com. These attacks are directed against WordPress sites and they have been overwhelming the server, causing it to crash.

What has MacHighway done to stop these attacks?
We have placed an additional layer of authentication in front of your WordPress admin page. This stops the attackers from using common WordPress hacks against your WorpdPress powered site, and keeps the server load

Expected Outage: 15 – 30 Min. Reason: Reboot to repair kernel Mismatch

Action required by Customer: None.

Additional Details:

During repairs earlier today, our technicians discovered a kernel mismatch which has potential to bring down the server and cause further problems. A reboot of the system is expected to fix this mismatch and stave off future unplanned outages.

We appreciate your patience as we make these necessary and pro-active changes.
